Former Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips has expressed his doubts about Calum Chambers’ future at Arsenal.
While praising the player for proving doubters wrong with his recent performance with the chance given to him, the former striker stated that while manager Mikel Arteta can rely on him, he does not believe he has a future at the Emirates Stadium.
Phillips also lauded the England international for putting his doubts to rest with his performance on Thursday.
“Credit to Chambers,” he told Football Insider’s Dylan Childs, “because it hasn’t been an easy road for him at Arsenal.”
“He’s gotten a lot of flak over the years, but all you can do when you get on the field is attempt to shove those criticisms down people’s throats.” At Anfield, he’s done just that.
“After removing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as captain, Arteta is attempting to create something with the spirit at Arsenal.” He’s serious about business, and he expects his players to be as well.
“Against Liverpool, Chambers truly responded to the occasion; he was outstanding.” Is he Arsenal’s long-term solution? I’m not convinced, but he’s someone Arteta can count on.”
Chambers has only started two league games for Arsenal this season, despite making five appearances in total.
After joining the Gunners in 2014, the versatile defender’s contract expires at the end of this season.
