The Benfica boss had his stance in not doing away with his summer signing Enzo Fernandez during this winter and slapped a heavy price on his sought-after midfielder but Chelsea was not having any of it as they wanted Enzo at all costs.
Rui Costa described the sum Chelsea ended up paying as ridiculous given that he had just bought Enzo Fernandez from River plate six months ago for around 10 million euros.
Enzo Fernández was sold after hearing the plan for Chelsea to be competing for the UCL and Premier league every single season as well as his after tax salary reaching £5m a season, Costa described Chelsea to Enzo as a club in turmoil with new owners making poor decisions.
“Enzo Fernández did not want to stay at Benfica. He didn’t give us any chance. I did my best, I’m sad but I’m not gonna cry for a player who didn’t want to stay”.
The key difference in this deal coming to really was Enzo Fernandez wanting to move at all cost to chelsea as he wanted his family to move.
Todd Boehly didn’t want to gamble even though he knew he would pay a lot less if he went for Enzo Fernandez during the summer transfer window for just 88 million but he would have had to deal with having to deal with rivals such as Liverpool, real Madrid and Manchester City.
