Arsenal should recruit Dominic Calvert-Lewin as their new striker, according to Paul Merson, in order to strive for Champions League qualifying.

Arsenal will almost certainly be looking for a new centre-forward this summer, as both Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are out of contract, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s form is rapidly deteriorating, with the Gabonese international also missing the win over Southampton due to disciplinary issues.

A slew of top strikers have been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium, including Mauro Icardi of PSG, Lille’s Jonathan David, and Atletico Madrid’s Joao Felix.

Merson, a former Arsenal striker who is now a commentator, had another name in mind: Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The Toffees’ striker has been linked with a move to north London, although his season has been marred by injury.

Merson told Sky Sports that the 24-year-old would be ideal for Arsenal, adding that his goals would undoubtedly catapult the team into the top four.

“Arsenal should go out and sign Calvert-Lewin as soon as he’s fit,” he remarked. Make a huge offer for him. They need a decent, strong focal point up front who can hold the ball up.”

Calvert-Lewin scored in each of Everton’s first three Premier League games this season, but he has been out since suffering a fractured toe. Everton’s poor form while his absence reflects how important the England international has been to the club.

He has averaged a goal contribution every other game for the Merseyside club over the last two and a half seasons.

When asked why he thinks Calvert-Lewin wants to join Arsenal, Merson responded simply: “It’s the Arsenal.”

“Everton isn’t as large as Arsenal.” Arsenal will finish ahead of them. They have a chance to make the top four if Calvert-Lewin leaves.”

Calvert-Lewin is valued at £40.5 million by Transfermarkt, therefore a move for him would be costly.
